Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. With more than 100 telescopes located in the northern and southern hemispheres, CTA will be the world’s largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory. SiPM e PMT Over 1500 researchers from 31 countries

ASTRI Mini-Array

ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia replicante Italiana) - a Small Size Telescope (prototype & array) for the INAF project: Array of 9 telescopes positioned on Mount Teide at island of Tenerife.

SiPM Various INAF institutes and Italian and foreign universities

Muography of Etna Volcano

MEV

Instrument capable of reconstructing the trace of muons within its field of view to make high-resolution muons radiography of the summit craters of Etna Scintillators bars + MAPMT  DFA, UNICT, INAF, INFN, INGV, Parco dell'Etna
Trasferimento tecnologico

The Distretto Tecnologico Sicilia Micro e Nano Sistemi is a consortium including Companies, Universities, Research organisations, and Associations representing manufacturing and service companies in Sicily. It represents an intergrated and coherent system of “research-training-innovation” which is meant to support the sustainable economic growth following specific strategic directions: sustainability, aggregation, enhancement and interpretation of the territory, attraction of talents, dexterity, control and monitoring.

INAF is one of the founding members of this district.

Various collaborations

Muon Portal

The Muon Portal Project is a joint initiative between research and industrial partners, aimed at the construction of a real size detector protoype (6 x 3 x 7 m3) for the inspection of containers by the muon scattering technique, devised to search for hidden high-Z fissile materials and provide a full 3D tomography of the interior of the container in a scanning time of the order of minutes. Scintillators bars + SiPM  DFA, UNICT, INAF, INFN, STM, Meridionale Impianti

Sense

SENSE was a Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action aiming to coordinate research and development efforts in academia and industry in low light-level sensoring. Different types of sensors  DESY, MPG, UNIGE, KIT, INAF, Nagoya UNI, CERN, ICCUBE
TOMOX X-ray tomograph for lunar and planetary exploration CCD  Ud'A, INAF, UNIPV, UNICA, ASI

High Time Resolution Astrophysics - Intensity Interferometry

Very fast photon counting photometers for astronomical applications. One example: IquEYE for the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope. These instruments can be considered as precursors for the intensity interferometry technique  SPAD  UNIPD, INAF, ASI, UNI Slovenia
