Innovative detectors

Usually the scientific imaging systems for astronomical applications are based on Charge Coupled Devices (CCD). Recently new imaging devices have been developed for scientific applications. One of these devices is the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Active Pixel Sensor (CMOS-APS).

Both devices are essentially integrating devices and suffer from the read-out noise.

For very faint sources the CCD or the CMOS-APS alone may not be sufficient, thus techniques of intensifying the signal and go in photon counting regime have been developed. At the moment some upgrades are in progress in various laboratories and manufacturers around the world.

Examples of such detectors are:

 Intensified CCD  -->   ICCD
 Intensified APS -->   IAPS
 Low Light Level CCD -->   L3-CCD
 Single Photon Avalanche Diode -->   SPAD


The group devote part of the research activity to design and test Photon Counting detectors

The Intensified APS (IAPS) and the Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) are under test characterization, while a complete test on the L3 CCD has been planned in the next future.
